Q: What is "organic" dry cleaning?
A: Due to the enormous growth of the green market over the past few years, what we see happening with these so-called organic dry cleaners is a perfect example of the "green-washing effect." Basically, what this means is that traditional businesses are trying to cash-in on this growing sector of the economy without making major changes in their business practices. In traditional dry cleaning, a chemical called perc is used as a solvent to clean the clothes. This chemical is highly toxic and is a "known" carcinogen so many dry-cleaners are coming up with less toxic alternatives. The "organic" dry cleaners are using a petroleum-based product (which is produced by Exxon & Chevron) and they can call themselves "organic" because petroleum is a "naturally occurring" substance. Now while I admit this is a step in the right direction, it's not "organic" nor is it even close to being the most eco-friendly alternative for dry cleaning. Your best options are: 1. Wet Cleaning, 2. Liquid CO2
